  • Calm waters with sailing ships in Maine

New England is filled with ocean shores and inland lakes. If you are planning a road trip, save room for your kayaks and paddleboards. We have created a short list of some of our favorite places to paddle in the northeastern United States.

Squam Lake | New Hampshire
On Golden Pond was set on these idyllic waters decades ago and it remains a relaxing destination for water lovers today. Paddle out before sunrise to enjoy a perfectly picturesque moment.

Thimble Islands | Connecticut
Tour this stunning archipelago in the Long Island Sound. The pink granite islands dot the water to create a one-of-a-kind waterborne experience. The islands are a quick, 20-minute drive-and-paddle from New Haven, Connecticut.

Upper Wood River | Rhode Island
Perfectly still waters wind through rural Rhode Island on their way to the ocean. This is an excellent choice for beginners as water is often slow and steady. There are several launch points. Check with your rental company to get a suggestion.

Kittery | Maine
Kittery is surrounded by water, including the Piscastaqua River and Spruce Creek. The shores are known for their rocky features; however, some sandy launches can be found as well. Spruce Creek is a popular destination for paddlers looking to explore the endless inlets and shores.

Plum Island | Massachusetts
One hour north from the center of Boston is Plum Island. It’s a barrier island that keeps ocean waters calm, perfect for kayaking. Explore the open water or paddle inland along the Parker River.

Lowell Lake State Park | Vermont
Especially for stand-up paddle boarders, it’s helpful that the park doesn’t allow motorized boats. Lowell Lake is a perfect place to try paddleboarding for the first time. Especially on a summer morning, the water is serene, and the views are hard to beat. You can find the lake less than an hour from Bennington.
