Looking for somewhere your friends haven’t already been?

Meet Georgia, a small country sitting at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where the peaks of the Caucasus Mountains eventually give way to the shores of the Black Sea. For centuries, its position along historic trading routes brought different cultures, flavours and influences together, helping create a destination that feels distinctly Georgian.

It may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about your next big trip, and that’s part of its appeal.

This is a country where ancient monasteries sit against snow covered mountains, neighbourhood bakeries still make bread in traditional clay ovens and local wine comes with a story stretching back around 8,000 years. Add in a distinctive food scene, Black Sea beaches, skiing, nightlife and a capital packed with cafés, wine bars and historic streets, and you’ll start to wonder why Georgia wasn’t already on your list.

For travellers who prefer to experience a place rather than simply tick off its landmarks, there is even more to discover. Spend an afternoon browsing a neighbourhood market, try khinkali, Georgia’s famous filled dumplings, in a local restaurant, stop at a roadside stall in the mountains or order a Georgian wine you’ve never heard of. Find a café, open your laptop and stay a little longer.

One Country. Four Completely Different Sides.

Our Georgia road trip begins among the cobbled streets and colourful balconies of Tbilisi, climbs high into the Caucasus Mountains around Gudauri, slows down among the ancient landmarks and green landscapes of Kutaisi, and ends beside the Black Sea in Batumi.

Pack comfortable shoes and bring your appetite. We’re heading from the capital to the coast.

Tbilisi, Where Old Georgia Meets the New

Begin in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital and a city where centuries of history sit alongside a growing creative, food and nightlife scene.

One of the best ways to get to know it is simply to walk. Wander through Old Tbilisi, where traditional wooden balconies lean over narrow streets, before heading towards Abanotubani, the city’s historic sulfur bath district. Here, distinctive brick domes hide naturally heated baths beneath the streets, while the colourful tiled exterior of Chreli Abano is difficult to miss.

From nearby Rike Park, take the cable car towards Narikala Fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue for views across the rooftops. Then head back to street level and look beyond the major attractions. Step into a traditional bakery, browse a local market for Georgian cheese and snacks and make time for a glass of local wine.

Georgia has around 8,000 years of winemaking history, and traditional qvevri wine is still fermented in large clay vessels buried underground. A wine tasting in Tbilisi is an easy way to discover the story and perhaps find a few new favourites.

For a completely different perspective, visit the monumental Chronicle of Georgia. Its enormous carved pillars depict scenes from Georgian history and Christianity, with sweeping views across the Tbilisi Sea reservoir and surrounding landscape.

After a full day exploring, make Best Western Tbilisi City Center your base before the road trip heads north.

Neighbourhood tip: Don’t plan every hour in Tbilisi. Leave some space to wander around the Old Town and stop when you find an interesting bakery, wine shop or café. Tbilisi is hilly and its cobbled streets are not always forgiving, so comfortable shoes are a must.

From City Streets to Caucasus Peaks

Once Tbilisi disappears behind you, Georgia begins to show you a completely different side of itself.

The drive towards Gudauri is not simply the route to your next hotel. It’s part of the adventure, with mountain scenery, historic landmarks and roadside stops appearing along the way.

Pause beside the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, browse the small roadside stalls and continue towards Ananuri, an impressive historic fortress complex overlooking the water. As you climb higher into the Caucasus, you’ll eventually reach the colourful Georgia Russia Friendship Monument, sitting high above a vast mountain valley.

Then comes Gudauri.

During winter, this is one of Georgia’s best known ski destinations, surrounded by snowy Caucasus peaks. Experienced skier? Head for the slopes. Complete beginner? Rent some equipment and give it a go. If skiing isn’t your thing, find somewhere warm, order a hot chocolate and simply enjoy having that mountain landscape outside the window.

Stay at Best Western Gudauri and give yourself time to enjoy the mountains before continuing your journey west.

Neighbourhood tip: Don’t rush this drive. Give yourself time for the unexpected stops, whether that’s a mountain viewpoint, a roadside stall or somewhere that simply looks too good to drive past.

Road trip tip: If you’re renting a car, check the rental company’s conditions before setting off. Some companies restrict where their vehicles can be driven, particularly on certain mountain roads or during particular times of year. Weather can also change road conditions quickly, so check official updates before travelling and don’t rely only on your navigation app.

Kutaisi, Georgia at a Slower Pace

After Tbilisi’s energy and Gudauri’s dramatic mountains, Kutaisi brings the pace back down.

One of Georgia’s oldest cities, Kutaisi is somewhere to wander without much of a plan. Cross the White Bridge, browse the fruit, spices, cheese and local produce at the Green Bazaar, then continue towards the striking Colchis Fountain in the heart of the city.

History is never far away. Bagrati Cathedral rises above Kutaisi, while nearby Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a glimpse into Georgia’s medieval history and culture.

Some of the region’s most memorable sights, however, are hidden underground. At Sataplia Nature Reserve, walk through Colchian forest, explore a karst cave and see preserved dinosaur footprints. For an even bigger underground adventure, visit Prometheus Cave, where enormous chambers are filled with stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes and waterfalls.

Back in the city, Best Western Kutaisi City Center makes a convenient base for exploring Kutaisi and the surrounding Imereti region.

Neighbourhood tip: Make time for the Green Bazaar even if you’re not planning to buy anything. Local markets are one of the easiest ways to step away from the sightseeing checklist and see a more everyday side of Georgia. Although, with all that cheese, fruit and local produce around you, leaving empty handed might be difficult.

Batumi, Where the Road Meets the Black Sea

After mountains, monasteries, markets and caves, the landscape changes once again.

Welcome to Batumi, where palm trees, bold architecture and the Black Sea bring a completely different energy to the final part of the journey.

This fast changing seaside city is an unusual mix of old and new. Contemporary towers rise beside older buildings, cafés spill onto the streets and the long Batumi Boulevard follows the waterfront through parks and beachfront areas.

Spend the daytime exploring Europe Square and the Old Town, then give yourself a few hours for the Batumi Botanical Garden. Set high above the coastline, its paths wind through plants from around the world and open onto beautiful viewpoints across the Black Sea.

As the sun begins to set, make your way back towards the boulevard. This is when Batumi starts to show another side of itself. Restaurants and bars fill up, the waterfront becomes a popular place for an evening stroll and the city’s nightlife and casinos keep things going long after dark.

Neighbourhood tip: Give Batumi both a day and a night. Spend the daylight hours exploring the gardens, streets and coastline, then head back towards the waterfront around sunset. Find somewhere local for dinner and finish the evening with a walk along the boulevard.

There is also one practical detail road trippers will appreciate: parking. Finding a space in busy parts of Batumi can be challenging, so accommodation with parking can make arriving in the city considerably easier. Best Western Plus Batumi offers complimentary outdoor parking, while Best Western Premier Batumi offers underground garage parking.

Maybe It’s Time to Put Georgia on the Map

The best road trips are not only about where you start and where you finish. They’re about everything that changes in between.

And in Georgia, a lot changes.

This is a journey that can take you from a tiny bakery hidden down a Tbilisi street to the vast peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, through neighbourhood markets and ancient monasteries, into underground caves and eventually all the way to the Black Sea.

But perhaps the best part is everything that doesn’t make the itinerary. The wine you ordered because you’d never heard of it. The roadside stall you weren’t planning to stop at. The local dish you end up talking about when you get home.

Georgia gives you plenty of famous places to see, but it also gives you space to find your own.

And sometimes, that’s the best reason to take the road less travelled.
