Traveling to new destinations has a way of not only broadening our horizons but also deepening the bonds we share with our loved ones. Recently, I had a chance to do both as I embarked on a trip to Peru with my dad to fulfill his long-awaited dream of visiting Machu Picchu. I discovered that this journey was about more than just exploring a new place – it was about strengthening our connection and embracing the spirit of adventure together.

My parents were planning to visit Peru at the end of 2023. However, they were never able to make the journey. My mom unexpectedly suffered from a stroke and passed away due to complications in July of 2023. As we planned our trip to Peru, we decided to make it even more special by scheduling it over Mother’s Day. We wanted to honor my mom’s memory in a way that felt meaningful and close to her spirit.

Lima: Ambiance and Culture in a Coastal Paradise

Setting foot in Lima, we found ourselves at the Best Western Plus Urban Larco in Miraflores, a cozy sanctuary where we would call home for the next 5 days. The vibrant city beckoned us to explore, and we wasted no time immersing ourselves in the local culture. The hotel’s cozy ambiance and welcoming staff made us feel right at home, allowing us to unwind and prepare for the adventures that lay ahead. We thoroughly enjoyed carving out time for daily walks along the scenic paths that hugged the coastline. Time was set aside every day before dinner to take in the stunning sunsets that painted the sky!

Rainbow Mountains: A Daring Ride to a Meaningful Vista

Our journey took us beyond Lima, to the enchanting city of Cusco, where we soaked in the rich history and vibrant energy that permeated the streets. But it was our excursion to the Rainbow Mountains that truly captured the essence of our adventure. As we embarked on the challenging hike to the peak, I watched in awe as my dad, always one to embrace new experiences, decided to take a horse to reach the summit.

The sight of him riding up the rugged terrain, his eyes filled with determination and joy, is a memory I hold dear. It symbolized not just a physical ascent but also a metaphorical one – a journey of resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit. As we stood at the top, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Rainbow Mountains, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this magical moment with my dad.

Machu Picchu: Much More than a Bucket List Experience

Finally, the day arrived for us to visit Machu Picchu, a dream my dad had held onto for so long. As we hiked through the mystical ruins, surrounded by mountains and remnants of an ancient civilization, I saw a sense of peace and fulfillment wash over my dad’s face. In that moment, it felt as though we were not just crossing off a travel destination, but also carrying on a legacy of love and exploration that my mom had instilled in us.

Our time in Peru was filled with laughter, exploration, and shared experiences that bound us together in a way words cannot fully capture. Whether we were marveling at the wonders of Machu Picchu or tackling the challenges of the Rainbow Mountains, every moment was a testament to the power of connection and the joy of discovery.

As we bid farewell to Peru, I knew that this journey had not just been about crossing off destinations on a bucket list but about building a foundation of connection and new adventures between my dad and me. Our trip to Peru opened our eyes to the beauty of the world and the strength of our bond, reminding us that the greatest adventures are those shared with the ones we love most.
