New Jersey may be close to one of the biggest cities in the world, but this state has so much more to offer. From historical places that capture American history to endless beach fun, this state is a perfect intersection of the past, present, and future.

With a Best Western Hotels and Resorts to call home base, here are several must-sees in New Jersey to add to your itinerary:

Go into town

Morristown

Morristown has been described as a place where “revolutionary meets modern,” and accurately so. It’s home to the nation’s first historical park – Morristown National Historical Park – where then General George Washington and his army encamped over two winters during the Revolutionary War. You can visit the Ford Museum at the park – an 18th-century farm that has reconstructed soldier huts – and enjoy 27 miles of marked hiking trails. Be sure to visit the Frelinghuysen Arboretum for an enchanting walk through the 127-acre gardens of native and exotic plants. Then, take your taste buds on a journey with the many options the area has to offer, such as Saigon Subs & Café, Colonial Grill, and Stirling Tavern, to name a few.

Long Beach

This 18-mile-long island is a beach lovers paradise with shore towns, white sandy beaches, and endless ocean views. Each section of the nearly 20-miles of beachfront is unique. Head to Barnegat Light for relaxation among wide beaches and scrubby pines, or visit Holgate for sandy beaches and dunes. Long Beach Island is perfect for solo adventures, family get-togethers, or couple retreats.

Get outside

High Point State Park

Home to the highest summit in the state, High Point State Park has more than 50 miles of trails, a 20-acre lake – Lake Marcia, and a monument that honors New Jersey veterans of all ways. You’ll find some incredible viewpoints and the setting for many recreational activities that include boating, canoeing, and kayaking.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Shared with Pennsylvania, the park has over 70,000 acres of forested mountains, river valleys, and floodplains. Guests come to the park to marvel at the beautiful tumbling waters and quiet hemlock forests, which offer more than 100 miles of hiking and waterfall chasing. Notably, Millbrook Village is a visitor favorite for its re-created 1800s community that gives a glimpse into the pioneer life.

Things to do

  • The Atlantic City Boardwalk has several attractions, unique shops, and delicious eateries to explore. It’s the perfect place to spend a day with the family. There is no wrong direction when exploring the boardwalk with the ocean and beach on one side and shopping and restaurants on the other.
  • New Jersey has its wonders to explore and stands strong on its own, but one of the big draws of the state is how close it is to New York City. Liberty State Park is a great spot in New Jersey that gives you views of New York City without going into the city. With magnificent views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, Liberty State Park is a green oasis. Walk, run or bike along the waterfront or take the kids to play. Be sure to visit the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial, two brushed stainless steel twin walls, honoring the memory of the people that lived or had ties to New Jersey that lost their lives on 9/11.
