Nestled in the northeast corner of the U.S. is the beautiful state of Maine. Known for its seafood, lighthouses, and beautiful coastlines, Maine is a dreamer’s paradise where delicious food and sandy beaches are around every corner.

With a Best Western Hotels & Resorts to call home base, here are several must-sees in Maine to add to your itinerary:

Go into town

Augusta

The capital of Maine, Augusta, is the place to visit for the best mixture of history and culture, nature and food. We recommend spending time in downtown, where you’ll encounter some of the best people around doing the things they love. Head to Cushnoc Brewery where you can munch on pizza and beer while marveling at the beautiful architecture or visit Red Barn where they serve foot-long lobster rolls. Downtown Augusta is bustling with life and energy.

Bangor

Once the lumber capital of the nation, Bangor has developed into something beyond its rich lumber history. However, you can still say hi to the lumberjack of lumberjacks, Paul Bunyan, on Main Street. If you are a fan of horror, Stephen King fans can sign up for a tour where they can visit locations from his books and his house which is perfectly designed with an eccentric spider gate.

Portland

Like its namesake in Oregon, Maine’s Portland is an artistic, outdoor, and stylish place. But the one experience that is a must in Portland is lobster. As they say, and you can’t visit without having it in its many variations; steamed lobster, lobster chowder, lobster mac-and-cheese, and lobster rolls.

Get outside

Reid State Park and Popham Beach State Park

Beaches are a must when exploring Maine as the coastline offers different terrains from sandy beaches to pebbled shores. Regardless, a summer day on a Maine beach is incomparable. Visit Reid State Park or Popham Beach State Park as they not only show off the natural beauty of the state but make the perfect spot to swim, bird watch, fish, and watch wildlife.

Acadia National Park

This national park is one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the U.S., and rightfully so. Located on Mount Desert Island, the park is nearly 50,000-acres of beautiful views, hiking trails, lakes, and wildlife. It’s hard to narrow down a to-do list when visiting, but key must-sees are Cadillac Mountain which is the highest point on the U.S. east coast, Great Long Pond for a day of aquatic fun, and Thunder Hotel, a natural inlet in the coastal rocks which is known for bringing the waves.

Things to do

  • Take a trip to Kittery, home to Kittery Outlets and Kittery Premium Outlets, located on the southern coast of Maine. If there is one thing to take with you from Maine, it’s a good bargain! Shop your favorite retailers, find some local gems, and enjoy a bite at one of the many eateries in the area.
  • You can’t go to Maine and visit the pristine beaches without seeing a lighthouse or two. The state has 65 lighthouses – many that are open to the public – and all photo-worthy. Many lighthouses provide access into the keeper’s quarters or have connected museums where you can take a souvenir home.
