Enjoy Alabama’s southern hospitality and welcoming atmosphere that proves “sweet home Alabama” isn’t just a saying. Enjoy year-round golf, explore the state’s civil rights legacy or have fun in the sun on one of the many beaches.

With a Best Western Hotels & Resorts to call home base, here are several must-sees in Alabama to add to your itinerary:

Go into town

Tuscumbia

Visit this quaint and charming town, located at the base of the foothills of the Appalachians. Guests can explore the historic downtown area, visit the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, or Helen Keller’s birthplace, known as Ivy Green. Though small, Tuscumbia packs a mighty punch and is not an experience to be missed.

Dauphin Island

If there is any place to go to for some fun in the sun in Alabama, it’s Dauphin Island. Home to the Historic Fort Gaines, which played an active role in the Civil War, to the Cedar Point Fishing Pier, retirees, families and couples have various options to partake in. Plus, the island’s public beach brings uncrowded, sunny fun for all.

Huntsville

Known as “Rocket City,” Huntsville’s history with space is as early as putting a man on the moon. Once where rockets were developed, the city is home to the world’s largest space museum – the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.  Another thing that puts Huntsville on the map is its diverse and well-preserved home styles, from Victorian, Bungalow, Ranch and Antebellum, to name a few.

Get outside

Cathedral Caverns State Park

This 1.3-mile exploration is an experience fit for any level of adventurer. Visitors can head into the cave where several exciting adventures can be found, from seeing the stalagmite formations to seeing a prehistoric shark’s tooth embedded in the ceiling. Watch out for bats!

Cheaha State Park

Find solitude on Alabama’s highest point at Cheaha State Park. This 2,799-acre park provides a premier spot for witnessing sunsets and offers various hiking trails that lead to remarkable destinations.

Dismals Canyon

Caverns, grottos and slot canyons make up Dismals Canyon, including diverse native plant life. The canyon walls also share more than geological history; bluff shelters and other sanctuaries have shown what many humans’ cultures once were at Dismals Canyon, including Paleo, Cherokee Chickasaw inhabitants. This small but beautiful piece of Alabama is a must for anyone in the area.

Things to do

  • Feed your mind with the places and moments that pushed history forward with a civil rights tour. From the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma that held the events of “Bloody Sunday” to the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station, the setting for the Freedom Riders protests that helped end racial segregation in all interstate transportation.
  • Who said ghost stories were just for Halloween? In Alabama, ghost stories can be found daily. See if you can catch the ghost of children playing at Dead Children’s Playground in Maple Hill Cemetery or dine at Alabama’s “most haunted restaurant” at the Gainesridge Dinner Club for a chance to encounter one of its residential ghosts
