Break out the cute outfits and gear up for some serious girl time for a girls’ getaway in Charleston, South Carolina. Aside from its fascinating history and warm, Southern charm, Charleston is also packed with top-notch dining, diverse shopping, arts, culture and adventures on the harbor. When it comes to planning your next gal-pal getaway, “Chucktown” Charleston, South Carolina commands a serious look.

Enjoy Your Stay

The perfect place to stay for a girls’ weekend in Charleston, is none other than the Best Western Charleston Inn. Located minutes from downtown Charleston and Historic Charleston, immerse yourself in all the city has to offer without sacrificing convenience or style in the process. Book a pool view room so you can sunbathe at the largest outdoor swimming pool and pool deck in Charleston.

Shop in Charleston

King Street’s boutiques blend the fun of exploring the city’s charming streets with all your favorite things. Shops here showcase everything from gifts to high-end jewelry to clothes and shoes. Croghan’s Jewel Box and Hampden are two popular picks. Stop in and peruse over 100 candles in the “library” at Candlefish, and, for a truly meaningful find, IBU is a must. The store features clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gifts made from women artisans around the world, in an effort to end poverty.

Of course no trip to Charleston would be complete without popping into the historic Charleston City Market, a historical landmark that features dozens of retailers (pick up a handwoven sweetgrass basket or two) and lots of places to eat. What’s the bottom line? Pack a bag or two inside your suitcase to transport your finds back home.

Dine in Charleston

Whether your crew likes to gab over brunch or chat late into the evening, the Holy City has plenty of options. From fresh and healthy flavors to seasonal craft cocktails, Basic Kitchen is a sound choice for any group. Grab a coveted spot on the covered patio (it’s filled with the plants and herbs used by the restaurant), and sip on a beet margarita or signature mocktail while you sample sides: sweet potato fries with vegan cashew ranch and chives are always a hit.

While visiting the coast, seafood is a must. With its old-school fish-house vibe and elevated aesthetic, Hank’s on Hayne Street won’t disappoint. Belly up to the saloon-style bar for a glass of wine and oysters, and round out the leisurely evening with fresh, roasted grouper or hearty seafood bouillabaisse. Fish-averse friends have options, too: chicken, beef tenderloin, and tons of sides.

Classy crews that dig dining in historic houses should consider Poogan’s Porch, a fully restored Victorian-era home. Buttermilk fried chicken, anyone? Go for it. Or, the similarly stunning Muse Restaurant & Wine Bar is another great option, too.

Things to Do in Charleston

Grab the gals and explore Chucktown (and log some serious steps!) on a walking tour. Walks of Charleston’s Richard Knoth, who was born and raised in the city, has been a go-to guide for decades. Be transported to bygone eras while strolling past awe-inspiring homes and flower-filled window boxes. (Skip the heels: cobblestone streets can be tough to navigate.)

The art-minded crews should head over to the Gibbes Museum of Art on Meeting Street. This gem, which opened in 1905, is home to over 600 miniature portraits, plus 18th- and 19th-century American paintings, sculpture and locally made furniture and silver decorative arts in its permanent collection. The Charleston Museum, which was founded in 1773 and touts itself as America’s first museum, is another worthy stop, with archaeology, costumes and fine art on display.

Toast to your friendships while aboard a relaxing sunset cruise led by Charleston Tours & Events. From aboard the 84-foot, three-masted wooden Schooner Pride, sail Charleston Harbor on a two-hour tour, which points out the harbor’s four forts (Fort Sumter being the famous one), views of Charleston’s church spires and other historic buildings, and the impressive Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which crosses the Cooper River. Sip on something as the sun sets (beer, wine, and sodas are available on board), and keep your eyes peeled for pelicans, dolphins, and other marine friends.

Finally, a girls’ trip to Charleston is not complete without some selfies over by Rainbow Row. These 13 colorful historic houses were painted pastel so that drunk sailors could find their way home easier. Today, Rainbow Row is a must-do for photos and the ideal backdrop for all your poses.
