The five Normandy landing beaches are emblematic sites, steeped in history. It was on these shores that the Allied forces landed on June 6, 1944, marking the beginning of the end of the Second World War in Europe. Today, these picturesque beaches attract thousands of visitors, who come here to learn more about this historic event and pay tribute to the fallen soldiers. In the surrounding area, there are three Best Western® Hotels & Resorts offering a warm welcome in the region’s top locations: Ouistreham, Caen and Trouville.

Let’s take a brief overview of these emblematic beaches, the scene of one of the most ambitious military operations in history:

Utah Beach

Utah Beach was one of the first beaches stormed by the Allies, on the morning of June 6, 1944, in order to establish a bridgehead from which to free Cherbourg and its port. More than 23,000 American soldiers took part in this titanic battle. Today, you can visit the Utah Beach Museum, which upholds the memory of these men and retraces the different stages of the offensive.

Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach is perhaps the most infamous beach of the landings. Remembered as “Bloody Omaha”, it was the scene of the greatest loss of life. Nearby, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer pays tribute to the soldiers who died during the landing. A visit to this cemetery is an emotional experience, a place where people come together to remember the sacrifice of these brave men.

Gold Beach

This Calvados beach stretches from Asnelles to Ver-sur-Mer, and was part of the British sector. At 7.35 a.m. on June 6, 1944, almost 25,000 English soldiers landed on Gold Beach. This beach is also known for its artificial port, installed at Arromanches and put into service on June 14, 1944. Today, you can discover remnants of the operation, including bunkers and fortifications. The town of Arromanches-les-Bains, with its museum and memorial, is also an essential place for understanding the history of the British sector.

Juno Beach

Juno Beach was attached to the Canadian sector during the Normandy landings. In common with the other Allies, Canadian troops showed exceptional courage in their assault against an aggressive and tenacious German defense. The Juno Beach Centre, located in Courseulles-sur-Mer, is a museum dedicated to Canadian soldiers. Here you will find interactive exhibits and poignant testimonials.

Sword Beach

Sword Beach was another important British beach during the landings. British forces came up against strong German resistance, but managed to secure this strategically vital area. Today you can visit the Pegasus Bridge Museum, which commemorates the crucial airborne operation that preceded the landings.
