Many high school seniors and their parents spend the spring touring colleges from coast to coast. Learn how you can make the most out of your tours with these do’s and don’ts.

Do Plan Early

If choosing a college or university seems daunting to you, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Create a game plan of schools you’re interested in touring at least six months before applications are due. This will give you enough time to plan out which you’d like to visit, make the time to travel there, and, of course, will give you time to fill out the applications of the schools you’re applying to.

Don’t Visit on a Weekend

Many colleges are dead zones by the time Friday afternoon comes around. Try to plan your campus visit on a weekday to see the school in action. Travel tip: Many colleges don’t follow the same fall and spring break schedule as high schools do. So, by traveling during your breaks you will be able to see the school in action, without having to miss any days yourself.

Do Talk to Students on Campus

The students on campus will know exactly what life is like at the university. Head to the school’s café or coffee shop to spark up a conversation with a student (or two) to ask them their opinion on hot topics like “What’s the best dorm to stay in?” and “Do I need a car on campus?”

Don’t Forget to Document Your Visit

As the saying goes, photos last a lifetime. Take pictures of your favorite (and least favorite) parts of each campus, so when it comes to submitting those applications, you can easily remember which schools you’re keeping and which you’re removing.

Do Take an Overnight Stay

Many colleges and universities offer overnight stay programs in the freshman dorms for incoming students to get a better feel of campus. Take advantage of this program to connect with other incoming freshman and to see what the school is like at night. Hey, you might even find a friend or two before school even starts! Parents – if the thought of leaving your kiddo out on their own for the first time is too daunting, Best Western Hotels & Resorts offers a variety of properties near many schools – letting you stay close (but not too close). Plus, you’ll have the night to yourself to see what this college town is really all about!

Don’t Rely Only on the Campus Tour

There’s so much more to a college than just the campus. College towns are a crucial part of the school experience and are a great place to explore when touring colleges. Discover what may be your favorite coffee joint, a local boutique to choose your first day look at and other hidden gems when you explore the college’s small-town charm.
