With more than 100 wineries and roughly 1,000 acres of vineyards, Texas’s Hill Country is one of the largest American Viticultural Areas in the country and makes for a top destination for wine lovers. Here are some of the top wineries in Texas Hill Country.

Ab Astris Winery

On seven acres in Stonewall, Texas, Ab Astris is a family-owned winery that has produced quality wines since 2018. Visit the tasting room and sip on the winery’s notable tannat, petite sirah, and more. On a small patio outside, take in the peaceful scenery, complete with oak trees and a vintage windmill, and pick up a few bottles of Stello, a classic white wine crafted in the style of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of France, or Avignon, a Texas Rhône-style wine. Look for special on-site events, like glassblowing, live music, and traditional pairing dinners. (Note: the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park is just a 5-minute drive away.)

Heath Sparkling Wines

For bubbly lovers, Heath Sparkling Wines in Fredericksburg is worth a stop. Located in a sleek, modern building on a sweeping vineyard, owners Brian and Jennifer Heath produce only sparkling wines here, ranging from a Brut Cuvée and Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs to a rare Old World-style Ramato, and more. Though many of the on-site amenities are reserved for members only, general public tastings are available daily and reservations are recommended.

Meierstone Vineyards

The stunning farm landscape is reason enough to visit Meierstone Vineyards, but the heritage story is even better. Set on a fifth-generation working farm and ranch in Stonewall, Texas, this tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday and flights include five wines for $22 per person, or pay $25 for a red-focused flight. For an even more memorable experience, book a private tasting in the vintage Blacksmith Shop. Reservations are recommended.

Becker Vineyards

An early pioneer of the Texas Hill Country vineyard surge, Becker Vineyards began in 1992 and, today, is the largest purchaser of French and American white oak barrels in the state of Texas. The vineyard grows over 50 acres of estate fruit, featuring 11 grape varietals. Fun fact: Lady Bird Johnson is said to have loved Becker wines, namely the Chardonnay. In the main tasting room, look out for her thank-you letters, plus many other notes and awards given to the Becker family over the years.

Das Peach Haus

At Das Peach Haus, a specialty retail shop set on a beautiful lakeside Fredericksburg, Texas, you’ll find a variety of Fischer & Wieser wines. Founded by Case Fischer and Mark Wieser as a roadside produce stand in 1969, the outfit today offers wine tastings in the tasting room, or guests can enjoy wines by the bottle or glass.

Kalasi Cellars

The story behind Kalasi Cellars is as interesting as its wines. Co-owner Nikhila Narra Davis comes from an agricultural background in India, where her family cultivated a wide variety of crops, from cocoa and coconuts to rice and turmeric. Today, she honors those roots with the wines at Kalasi Cellars, a venture she began with her husband, Greg, in 2017. The tasting room opened in 2020, and today, visitors can sample wines from Malbec to Sangiovese, and more. Ask about the wine pairing with chocolates inspired by Indian spices.

Wildseed Farms

What started as a working wildflower farm in Fredericksburg blossomed into a winemaking venture in 2015. At Wildseed Farms, stroll along nearly 200 acres of gorgeous flowers, then relax for a while with a dry or sweet sampling in the tasting room.
