It’s finally that time of year, where seasons are changing and new memories are meant to be made. Choosing to go on a holiday road trip with your loved ones will be the best decision you make this year. Here’s a few tips to prepare for your holiday road trip to make it the most enjoyable experience ever.

Time Your Trip Right

The day right before and after a holiday is always the busiest time on the road – try to avoid traveling then as much as possible. As odd as it may sound, traveling on the actual holiday is usually the most beneficial, traffic-wise.

Have Recording Devices Ready

We live in a society that loves to document special moments. Have your smart phones ready to record roadside attractions, silly selfies, and car karaoke with everyone singing “Life is a Highway” at the top of their lungs. For a nostalgic experience, purchase a disposable camera so you’ll be pleasantly surprised when the film is developed later!

Pack Holiday Outfits

Depending on where you’re driving, from somewhere warm to somewhere cold, or vice versa, you’ll want to dress according to the weather. Pack a swimsuit if you’re heading South and a parka if you’re heading North.

Also, don’t forget to pack holiday outfits – feel free to coordinate – for the actual holiday. Whether you choose to match in plaid or holiday colors, color coordinating will make the holiday away from home feel more festive and merrier.

Be Prepared to Eat

There’s lots of fast-food options on a holiday road trip, but if you want to stay healthy and hydrated, fill water bottles and pack lots of fruits, veggies, and nuts for snacks. For instance, small carrots, almonds, and berries, are all easy to eat by the handful.

Look at your route ahead of time and see if there are any foodie stops you can make, like retro roadside diners, or regional cuisines like saucy or dry barbecue.

Plan for Breaks, Detours, and Roadside Attractions

Driving requires focus, especially over long stretches. Drivers can opt to take naps, switch with another rider, or take breaks. They should be taking breaks every two hours or 100 miles – but breaks don’t have to be boring. Choose intentional breaks, like seeing slot canyons on your way to the Grand Canyon or stretching your legs on the beach driving up the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). For longer driving stretches, book your stay with  Best Western® Hotels & Resorts for a night of rest and relaxation.

Enjoy the Journey

Spending hours in the car doesn’t have to be tedious, especially with your favorite people in the vehicle. Play games, like the license plate game, tell stories, listen to your favorite playlist or podcast, and stop at random attractions like the ‘World’s Biggest Candy Store’. Just remember to have fun!
