Bicycle tourism is a booming industry, with many cities and states investing in urban and natural trails as a way to explore. Discover eight bicycle routes, paths and trails you can take to explore new cities across North America.

 1. Bizz Johnson Recreational Trail, California

Located just outside of Redding, California, the Bizz Johnson Recreational Trail is a must for any biking enthusiast. This rocky trail is 25.4 miles long, winding through the rugged Susan River Canyon.

2. Crooked River Canyon Scenic Bikeway, Oregon

The Crooked River Canyon Scenic Bikeway is one of Oregon’s hidden gems. The paved 37-mile ride features a waterfall, lakes, deep forests and wide-open vistas for visitors and locals alike to enjoy.

3. Interurban Trail Loop, Washington

On the 24-mile Interurban Trail Loop, you’ll have no idea you’re in the middle of Tacoma’s suburbs thanks to the dense forest surrounding either side of this paved trail. This trail is a great option for family travelers and young kids who are still getting used to being on a bike.

4. Parowan Gap Petroglyphs Trail, Utah

See history come to life on the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs Trail, a 0.4-mile paved loop featuring petroglyphs from several cultural groups, distinct wild flowers and a variety of native bird species. This short loop is also a great option for family travelers.

5. Mount Evans Road Recreational Trail, Colorado

Discover 28 miles of scenic mountain climbs on the Mount Evans Road gravel trail in Denver, Colorado. This trail is not for the faint of heart and reaches an altitude of more than 14,264 ft., so while oxygen levels are low, the views are as big and expansive as any ride you’ll do.

6. Desert Classic Trail, Arizona

If you’re visiting Phoenix, you need to test out the Desert Classic Trail on South Mountain. This 8.8-mile rocky trail requires a mountain bike and is a local favorite thanks to its scenic Sonoran views and great fall to spring weather.

7. Eastern Promenade Trail, Maine

Headed to Portland, Maine? Ride along the coast of the Fore River on the Eastern Promenade Trail, a mostly flat, paved pathway covering 4.2 miles of the bay. Pack your lunch to enjoy a picnic and sea breezes along one of the trail’s many benches and picnic tables.

8. Falmouth Shining Sea Trail, Massachusetts

The Falmouth Shining Sea Trail is a beautiful oceanside trail built in 1977 and extended in 2009. The 10.8-mile paved bikeway takes you right along the coast, letting you enjoy a quick dip in the ocean to cool down before completing your ride.
