Road trips are an American tradition and a rite of passage for all traveling families. Traveling by car is still the best way to experience everything between home and your destination. With a few simple tips, your family road trip doesn’t have to “build character.” Life on the open road can be extremely comfortable for you AND the kids.
Before you pack the car full of luggage, take a few moments to clean up. You will be surprised at just how much more comfortable you will be, starting your road trip in a clean car. You’ll know where to find everything and the car will feel twice as spacious.
Unrestricted access to snacks is rare at home and the same rules should apply on the road. Reserving the tastiest snacks as a reward for good behavior will give the kids a reason to be good besides “because I said so.” Another tactic could be to dispense the treats at landmarks and mile markers. This helps kids who struggle with the concept of time understand how much longer they will be in the car.
Believe it or not, this is a helpful trick for adults too. Rationing food over time improves energy and digestion. Pack healthy snacks from home for bonus points.
Four movies in a row or 10 straight hours of audiobooks is enough to leave the most patient mind a bit mushy. Vary your entertainment by playing games, music, trivia and activities that encourage interaction. Movies are a great pastime, but don’t let them distract you from the beautiful scenery just off the highway.
Eating meals at parks is a great way to calm young nerves and make the trip more fun for everyone involved. When parks are hard to find, search for a fast food spot with a play place. At the very least, pack a jump rope, hula hoop or frisbee to make every stop a little more entertaining. Again, this rule applies to adults as well, although we don’t recommend the child-sized slides for anyone over 10.
You know who you are. Most couples abide by an unspoken driver and co-pilot arrangement. While you may be more comfortable behind the wheel or reclined in the passenger seat, a few hours in one position may have you feeling restless. Swap responsibilities at gas and food stops to keep everyone rested and comfortable.
The best way to make your travel feel more luxurious is to keep a warm blanket and a soft pillow nearby. Passengers should make the most of their opportunity to lounge comfortably. Riders will sleep more soundly when they are bundled up. When you pack up the car, leave these items on top.
