There’s more to New England than chowder, lighthouses and American history (have you tried the chowder, though!?). Adventurers know that the Northeast corner of our country is still wild by nature. From the rocky shorelines to the Appalachian peaks, here are a few amazing hikes that locals love.

1. Champney Falls, New Hampshire
This 3.1-mile New Hampshire hike is the perfect family adventure. Hikers are treated to lush woods and hills along the way and a flowing waterfall over massive rocks at the terminus. Although this is a popular destination in the summer, winter hikers enjoy fewer crowds and the beauty of a frozen waterfall.

2. Ocean Path, Maine
Acadia National Park in Maine is a national treasure. Warm-weather visitors will enjoy views of the rocky shore and plentiful hiking paths fit for all skill levels. The Ocean Path is a stunning 3-mile exploration of the unique coastline. Complete the trails with the Gorham Mountain loop to enjoy even more scenic diversity.

3. Alander Mountain Trail, Massachusetts, Connecticut & New York
This trail straddles the borders separating Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut. It’s a 6-mile out-and-back that gains about 1,200 feet in scenic elevation. The trailhead is just a few miles from the famous Appalachians, a contiguous trail system that connects nearly all of the eastern states.

4. Hamilton Falls, Vermont
There are two ways to arrive at Hamilton Falls. From the south, you’ll do a moderately difficult 6-mile hike along creek sides and rolling hills. Approaching from the north, you will only need to walk a few hundred feet to arrive. Both options offer incredible views of the spectacular falls.

5. Block Island, Rhode Island
Block Island is a wonderful day trip from the mainland. It is a small, pristine destination that acted as a traditional lighthouse for the area. Today, you can ferry to the island, which is filled with hikes for all levels. Highlights include Clay Head Trail and Dicken’s Point.
